Dear Friend, As we approach Thanksgiving, a time traditionally centered around abundance and gratitude, I want to address a sobering reality: far too many families in our community are facing food insecurity. This was recently amplified by the federal government shutdown and subsequent scramble by people directly impacted and by many of us on the state, county and local levels to work to fill this urgent gap. In California, more than 1 in 5 households (approximately 8.8 million people) struggle to put food on the table. For households with children, that number rises to 27%. These statistics reflect a crisis that demands our attention and action, particularly as we enter the holiday season. Food insecurity isn't always about empty shelves. It includes: - Worrying about running out of food before having money to buy more
- Being unable to afford balanced, nutritious meals
- Eating less or skipping meals to make food stretch
- In the most severe cases, going an entire day without eating
Many generous people have asked me how they can make a difference. Here are some ways to provide immediate support: Share Food Access ResourcesPlease help spread the word about these websites that connect community members with food assistance today: Volunteer Your TimeThe need for food assistance doesn't end after the holidays. Ongoing policy changes and economic pressures mean that food insecurity will continue to affect our neighbors in the months ahead. The resources on my website remain available for anyone who needs them, and I encourage you to share them widely.
During this season of gratitude, I am deeply grateful for the compassion and generosity of our community. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the nutrition they need and deserve. With gratitude,
